Like so many people these days we work jobs outside the farm. That means we are always looking for a way to get things done easier and faster without having to ask or pay someone else to help. We have found that a good Border Collie can replace two or three people when it comes to gathering or working our stock. Our adult goats have seen grain enough to know what it is and they will follow you off a cliff to get some but there is nothing more frustrating than trying to gather up a bunch of two and three month old kids that have never seen grain. Trying to get these youngsters and even some of the old wise does to go into a corral or barn to get FAMACHA scored or weighed can require more patience than God gave me. This is where a good dog is worth its weight in gold. We have selected dogs that are aggressive enough to work cattle or goats (because we have both). This is not always an easy trait to find in a Border Collie as they have been developed primarily to work sheep. In order to work larger stock the dog must be aggressive and bold while working. We like our dogs to be willing to bite either head or heel to convince an old doe with kids or a stubborn boss cow to go in the right direction. They never hurt the animals but they must convince them that going the wrong way is more trouble than going the right way.

We don’t raise our dogs to show, in fact we don’t really consider ourselves in the business of raising dogs at all. We have a couple of good dogs that we are proud of and do occasionally raise a litter of pups. When we decide to breed one of our girls we are very selective in choosing a sire that is a proven working dog on cattle and goats. This allows us to be confident that the pups will grow up to be excellent working dogs. If you are looking for Border Collies for sale in Ohio please have a look at our pups for sale page.
